It is originated in a village in AnXi. It is one kind of the OoLong Tea, and tea soup is in golden color. It has slightly sweet similar to Osmanthus’s aroma as well. That’s how it got its name as “Huang Jin Gui”. It is the early blooming tea among the other type of OoLong Tea, it has the higher fragrance than other teas.

Huang Jin Gui (Huang Tan), there is two tales:

1. Back in the year 1860, in a village in AnXi, there was a young man – Lin Xin Qin married a girl named Wang Dan from another village. At that time, there was a local believes, which is after married for one month, the bride would have to bring a plant from her parents, which symbolizes lots of children and generations. Wang Dan brought 2 tea seeds from her parents. The couple took good care of the 2 plants. As it grew up, they found that the leaves were in gold color and it tasted similar to sweet osmanthus. Their neighbours were eager to try the tea, and then praised for the tea. By using the same sound of name Wang Dan’s name, the tea is named as “Huang Dan” – also known as Huang Jin Gui. A Businessman, tried to export to Southeast Asia, and the demand was more than what he could supply. As such, the prices of “Huang Dan” were boosting.

2. In the mid of the 19th centuries, a farmer in AnXi’s village named Wei Zhen went on an adventure along the north stream, he saw a plant which was full of golden leaves. He was curious and decided to transplant it to his home. Then he tried to use it as tea and it turns out to be amazing as the aroma and the taste were very nice. Soon he promoted it to the public and they liked it as well, and due to its colour, people name it “Huang Dan”.
